Dearest Edward,Thank you so much for the carnations; they are beautiful. I am writing you this letter, however, to say that I won’t be able to see you anymore. You are a great guy, Edward. You are funny and sweet and your breath smells like butterscotch… But I have fallen in love with the moon. He has given me his soft velvet glow and all the stars in the sky—and you simply cannot compete.

You’ll need to begin playing the song before you read the story.
Seriously.
this song is about boy
a normal boy
with a caring family and caring friends
who went to school and had hobbies and played sports
just a normal boythis song is about a war
a war that tore the boy from his home
that tore the boy from his family and his friends
that tore the boy from everything he loved and cared aboutthis song is about another land
a land that the boy fled to
that offered him safe harbor from the war
where he could begin anew
where he could meet new friends, find a new school, take up new hobbiesthis song is about a language
a language that was spoken in the other land
a language like any other
but without a word
without a word for love
and the other land had the concept of love
and had the act of love
but there was no word for love
and the boy learned to speak this languagethis song is about a life
a new life, in a another land
filled with new friends, new hobbies
filled with new relationships
and the boy felt like an outsider
something was always missingthis song is about a girl
a girl who was also foreign to the other land
a girl who was born on the other side of the war
just a normal girlthis song is about a friendship
of a friendship between the boy and the girl
of time spent
of stories told
of lives uncovered
and they forgave
and they were friendsthis song is about a feeling
a feeling that friendship wasn’t enough
something the boy had never felt before
something that made him stay awake at night
wide-eyed and floating
something that made the boy not just see
but feel the world around him
a feeling that saturated the world with colors
bolder than the boy had ever experiencedthis song is about a word
a word that the boy hadn’t spoken in ages
a word that the boy thought he had left behind
and even though they been born on different sides
and even though they had taken different paths
and even though they spoke different languages
they both knew the wordthis song is about love
and it is fucking awesome

“Mister? ‘Scuse me, Mister?”“Hm? Well, hey there. What can I help you with?”“I’m jus’ wonderin’ how much that car is sellin’ for over there?”“Which car? That striped one? Listen kid, you don’t want her… she’s a hunk a’ junk. Barely even starts up. I have dozens of cars on the lot. Let me do you a favor and show you some nicer ones.”“Naw, she’s beautiful… She’s the only one I’m interested in. How much?”“Well shucks, kid. I ‘ent gonna lie, she really ‘ent worth your money at all. I’ll sell her cheap, I ’spose, but I really can’t recommend her. Here, if you wan’t to buy her, at least take her for a test drive.”

It’s a hot summer day. A lazy sun beats down and the air is heavy, moist, and suffocating. A boy sits atop an old brick apartment building, dangling his spindly legs over the edge. He’s there every day, around the same time, sitting by an old clay flower pot and watching the sun slowly set.For as long as he can remember a rusty old tank, a sole remnant of a past foreign occupation, has sat just down the road from his apartment building. The road beyond the tank has long been rendered unusable by its obstructer and is beginning to show signs of neglect. The boy has never been past the tank, few people have.As the boy gazes across the horizon, he begins to hear a low rumble. He can barely make out, far in the distance, a parade of young men and women heading towards the tank. As they get closer, the boy can hear that the rumble is in fact a song. The people are singing all together, though not in perfect unison. Their voices mix and become a jubilant roar that sweeps across the road in front of them, clearing their way.Following close behind them is a small yellow bulldozer. The people begin to part as they reach the tank to let the bulldozer through. Metal meets metal and with a slow, heavy grind the bulldozer heaves the tank to one side of the road. The boy gets up slowly, nonplussed in the chaos, and makes his way down to the road with his clay flower pot. He joins the mass of a parade and all together they take their first steps past the tank as their voices rise as a melodic boom over the town.

“Hey c’mon, hurry up.”“H… hold on a sec, I think my skirt got caught on something. Do you really think we should be doing this?”“Maybe not… but I’ve always kind of wanted to. Don’t worry, we won’t get caught… There’s no one here.”“Do you even know how to sail one of these?”“No better time to learn, right? Here, watch you step. The wind is really picking up. Help me untie this knot.”“Okay… Listen, we have to have this back before it gets light out… ““Of course we will. Here, sit down, this is going to be amazing!”

“Sheffield County Sheriff’s Department, may I help you?”“Mmm… okay… sure…”“Wait, what was that? Your neighbor’s parakeet is singing too loud?”“Well have you tried talking to her, ma’am?”“Look, I don’t think I have the authority to help you out at all here. You’ll just have to wait it out and try to enjoy.”
